HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, emergency life support, management of casualty(s), management of the accident scene and other first aiders, until the arrival of trained medical professionals or other professional assistance. This unit incorporates the content of units HLTAID009 Perform CPR and HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.

  • Maintain the airway, breathing and circulation of an unconscious casualty

HLTAID010 -Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life threatening emergencies using basic life support measures only. This unit stands alone and incorporates the content of unit HLTAID009 Perform CPR.

  • Assess an emergency situation
  • Maintain the airway, breathing and circulation of an unconscious casualty (including CPR)
  • Administer First Aid for Minor Wounds & Apply Infection Control Procedures

  • Explain the legal and ethical responsibilities of a first aider
  • Determine first aid facilities and training requirements

HLTAID009 – Perform CPR

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. This is a stand-alone course and is the ideal course for businesses that need to meet compliance requirements while minimizing time spent away from the job. It encompasses one and two rescuer CPR and AED training for adults with the option to include training for infants and children.

  • Apply correct techniques for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

ALL First Aid courses include training in Defibrillation/AED Use, Asphyxia, Anaphylaxis using adrenalin auto – injector (Epi Pen), and Asthma Management -Bronchospasm using bronchodilator and spacer device.

{tabs Automated External Defibrillation}

This will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to understand the safety requirements when handling an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), as well as the skills to use an AED within the first minutes after a cardiac arrest.

Competencies to be achieved during the training:

At the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain why Early Defibrillation & the 'Chain of Survival' are essential
  • Explain the Structure & Function of the Heart
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Manage a cardiac arrest using an Automatic External Defibrillator - (AED)

{tabs First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis}

This will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to assist a person suffering an anaphylactic reaction until the arrival of medical assistance.

Competencies to be achieved during the training:

At the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Assess the situation
  • Provide appropriate first aid treatment for anaphylactic reaction.
  • Communicate details of the incident.
  • Evaluate first aid response to anaphylactic reaction.
  • Develop an anaphylaxis management plan.

{tabs Emergency Management of Asthma in the Workplace}

This will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to deliver blue reliever medication in an asthma attack within State and Territory guidelines.

Competencies to be achieved during the training:

At the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Recognise the early signs and symptoms of deteriorating asthma
  • Identify equipment used in an asthma attack.
  • Demonstrate the first aid management of an Asthma emergency.
  • Develop a workplace asthma management plan.
